The first Randolil perahera of the Kandy
Esala festival will place along the streets
of Kandy tonight.
The Randoli, will vend parade its way
through the streets of Kandy in an endless
torchlight parade made of hundreds of,
dancers, drummers, Chieftains and elephants.
The Kandy Esala Perahera, originally a
ritual invoking the blessings of the Gods to
assure timely rains for cultivation is an
occasion for local artistes to pay their
reverence to the sacred Tooth Relic and to
gods and goddesses.
The present Esala perahara in Kandy
comprising five Kumbal peraheras was started
in 1753 AD.
