Former President's funeral today

 

The funeral of former President D.B. Wijetunga will be held today at 3.00 p.m. at the Kandy Municipal Grounds in Getambe under State patronage.

The remains will be taken to the Parliament Complex from his residence in Pilimatalawa and will lie in- state there from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The national flag will be flown at half mast on all government establishments today as a mark to respect to the late President.

Wijetunga joined the United National Party in 1946 and he entered Parliament from Udunuwara electorate at the 1965 general election. During this regime Wijetunga functioned in various ministerial capacities holding the portfolios of Posts and Telecommunication, Power, Highways and Agricultural Development.

He was appointed Prime Minister in 1989 by President Ranasinghe Premadasa. and was sworn in as the fourth executive President of the country in 1993.
