Palestinian President arrives

President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Dr. Mahmoud Abbas arrived in the country this evening on a two-day state visit.

The Palestinian President was received at the Bandaranaike International Airport by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Mahmoud Abbas was elected President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in 2005.

Abbas is a leading politician in Fatah. He served as the first Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority in 2004. Before being named Prime Minister, Abbas led the PLO's Negotiations Affairs Department. He has served as Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee since 2004, after Yasser Arafat's death.

During his stay in Colombo, the Palestinian leader is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other political leaders of the country.
