bombs' |

The United Nations yesterday apologized to
the Government for their comments about the
use of cluster bombs on the Pudukkudyirippu
Government Hospital.
The statement issued by UN's Colombo based
spokesman Gordon Weiss has said the UN did
not point a finger at military, but its
comments were prompted by an Amnesty
International report denouncing the act
which they directly attributed to Government
Forces, the Daily News said today.
Disaster Management and Human Rights
Ministry Secretary Prof. Rajiv Wijesinghe
said the UN Resident Coordinator in Sri
Lanka Neil Buhne extended a verbal apology
yesterday for the comment made by its
spokesman, the Daily News said.
However, according to the newspaper the
Secretary has insisted on a statement that
would lead to a correction of the offending
comment.
Prof. Wijesinghe said that the report of the
use of cluster bombs by Government Forces
was a frail attempt by the defeated LTTE to
rouse emotions of the international
community. "We did a detailed analysis of
how the story escalated" he said adding that
the reports were trying to indicate the
Government was using the forbidden munitions
in its humanitarian mission to free
civilians from LTTE clutches. "They should
be careful not to fall into LTTE traps," he
added.
