Emergency medical services launched in
Jaffna |
|
|
|
An emergency ambulance services and
communications centre funded by U.S. Agency
for International Development (USAID) was
opened on Wednesday (February 18).
The event also marked the expansion of the
emergency access phone system to the entire
Jaffna District. Previously it was available
only in Colombo, Kandy and Galle.
The project in Jaffna is an extension of the
national 1-1-0 emergency services program by
the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition and
the Ministry of Local Government and
Provincial Councils to enhance access to
emergency medical services in Sri Lanka. In
addition to government resources, the
project was funded by a $200,000 grant from
the USAID.
While the 1-1-0 hotline is only available in
select areas, it is hoped that the project
will expand to provide emergency care to all
Sri Lankans island wide.
