Wrapping up a three-day visit to Sri Lanka,
The UN Under-Secretary General for
Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief
Coordinator, Sir John Holmes urged the LTTE
to free civilians kept in the remaining
combat Zone against their will, and to stop
forced recruitment, particularly of
children.
A statement issued by the Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
said Sir Holmes got first-hand assessment of
IDPs getting their basic needs being cared
for following his visit to Vavuniya.
He welcomed the increasingly good
cooperation between the Government, UN
agencies and NGOs in providing urgent food,
shelter and medical help to those people.
Mr. Holmes welcomed government assurance on
the welfare of the people in transit camps,
their family reunification and greater
freedom of movement and the increasingly
full access for UN agencies and NGOs to the
transit camps and centers.
During his visit, UN Under-Secretary also
announced a USD 10 million from the UN's
Central Emergency Response Fund to help meet
urgent humanitarian needs of those fleeing
the conflict.
