Japan Funds Humanitarian De-mining Activities in Sri Lanka

The Government of Japan has extended further support for the humanitarian de-mining activities in Sri Lanka and allocated Rs. 80 million to the Swiss Foundation for accelerated de-mining activities in the conflict affected areas of Mannar and Vavuniya. Mr. Marc Bonnet, Programme Manager of Swiss Foundation for Mine Action and Mr. Karosu Shimazaki, Ambassador of Japan signed a bilateral contract for this project, today (13) at the Embassy of Japan, Colombo.

In the past 12 months Japan has provided Rs. 283 million to FDS , Danish Deming Group (DDG) and Mines Advisory Group (MAG) for mine clearance in the East and North.

" Humanitarian mine clearance contributes to the early return, relief , and the resettlement of the IDPs in the conflict affected areas", said the Ambassador of Japan.

According to Mr. Marc Bonnet, Programme Manager, mine clearance is not an easy task requires security clearance for every person and all equipment which they will use. Due to these reasons the starting date of Humanitarian De-mining Programme cannot be specified ,but there is a clear possibility that this project will be launched next month,he said.
