SL, a pointer to others in healthcare development – Asst. Sec of ECOSOC

 

The success of Sri Lanka in achieving most Millennium Development Goals with regard to health was to be commended and should be a pointer to other countries as to how these important issues should be handled said Mr. Thomas Stelzer, Assistant Secretary General of ECOSOC when a delegation of ministers and participants at the current ECOSOC Regional Ministerial Meeting on Financing Strategies for Healthcare being held in Colombo met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees today.

Mr. Stelzer drew attention to the need to prevent issues being relegated to the background in the context of challenges faced by global financial crisis. He said it was necessary to help health related welfare of people very much in focus in present situation.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa welcoming the ministers and other delegates of ECOSOC outlined the efforts that Sri Lanka has been making to ensure good healthcare for the people. He said the government was giving priority to development of rural sector and in this too maintaining good standards of health was given necessary importance. The President said the development in rural sector today leading to the reversed trend of population from the urban to the rural areas which was most welcomed.

He also explained that Sri Lanka has been able to sustain its development agenda while carrying on a fight against terrorism to preserve democracy and ensure social welfare to all section of people.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said Sri Lanka has not lost sight of the areas of responsibility for the betterment of people while carrying out a fight to eradicate terrorism.

He expressed his appreciation of assistance Sri Lanka received from members of ECOSOC and looked forward to continued cooperation from them.

Mr. Lalith Weeratunga Secretary to the President, Ms. Kshenuka Seneviratne, Ms. Aruni Wijewardene of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated at the discussion.

The ECOSOC delegation included Mr. U. Nyan Win, Minister of Foreign Affairs Myanmar, Mr. Lyonpo Wangdi Norbu, Minister of Finance Bhutan, Mr. Aminath Jameel, Minister of Health Maldives, Mr, Madamin M Karataev, Deputy Minister of Health Kyrgyz Republic and Ms. Jadamba Tsolmon, Vice Minister of Health Mongolia.
