Over 57,000 civilians seek protection with security forces

 

Since January more than 57,394 civilians including women, children and the elderly have fled the LTTE area to the safety of government held areas, military sources said.

The number of civilians that crossed over to the Government controlled area yesterday (26) was 2,108, these include 571 men, 597 women, 940 children.

The LTTE cadres has been limited to an area of one sq. km excluding the no-fire zone (NFZ) demarcated by the government, Defence Affairs spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said at the press briefing yesterday(26).

The security forces has to liberate another 21 square kilometers in Mullaitivu, but out of it 20 square kilometers are constitute of safe zone, lagoon and the wetlands, Speaking at the press briefing Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

The government security forces are currently engaged in humanitarian operations more carefully as the LTTE cadres are hiding among the civilians in the safe zone, the LTTE has now set up gun positions in the NFZ this was proved by the LTTE by attacking from the safe zone on the Sri Lankan Air Force helicopters evacuating military casualties.

According to the Minister, the government has instructed the forces to carry out the operations without any harm to the civilians trapped in uncleared areas.
