In a gazette notification issued in 2006, the Government requested every household in the country to provide a list of temporary lodgers living with them to the nearest police station. The decision was taken as a public security enhancement measure, and deterrence against terrorist threats. The online registration facility is available only for the Western Province, at present.

The citizens are required to get them registered by directly accessing the portal, or at the registration centers established at local police stations and at Nanasala centers. The Ministry said that they ensure the confidentiality of all details provided and seeks public cooperation to make the project a success.
