Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama called
on the International Community to provide
humanitarian assistance to the civilians who
had entered the cleared areas in government
territory after being held hostage by the
LTTE in the No Fire Zone. He announced this
at a media briefing held at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs today (April 23). The
Foreign Minister said that food, water,
shelter and medicines are the core
requirements at the moment and that the
International Community has positively
responded to the government’s request and
agreed to provide necessary humanitarian
assistance.
The International Community’s perception
with regard to the contemporary situation in
Sri Lanka has now been changed and at
present they can understood the brutality of
the LTTE by witnessing fleeing civilians it
hold. The minister said these fleeing
civilians point to the confidence which they
have placed in the government.
The media briefing was held by the
Minister briefed the Diplomatic Corps on the
current situation in the North, and the
humanitarian needs that have risen due to
the surge of civilians to government held
areas there, following the success of the
humanitarian operations by the Security
Forces.
