World responds positively for relief to civilians

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama called on the International Community to provide humanitarian assistance to the civilians who had entered the cleared areas in government territory after being held hostage by the LTTE in the No Fire Zone. He announced this at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (April 23).

The Foreign Minister said that food, water, shelter and medicines are the core requirements at the moment and that the International Community has positively responded to the government’s request and agreed to provide necessary humanitarian assistance.

The International Community’s perception with regard to the contemporary situation in Sri Lanka has now been changed and at present they can understood the brutality of the LTTE by witnessing fleeing civilians it hold. The minister said these fleeing civilians point to the confidence which they have placed in the government.

The media briefing was held by the Minister briefed the Diplomatic Corps on the current situation in the North, and the humanitarian needs that have risen due to the surge of civilians to government held areas there, following the success of the humanitarian operations by the Security Forces.
