Japan offers help for peace building

Japan is among the first countries to welcome the defeat of the separatists Tamil Tigers and the end of hostilities in Sri Lanka.

Japanese Prime- Minister Taro Aso was told of the defeat of the LTTE in a telephone conversation with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Japanese Prime Minister welcomed the new developments, the ending of hostilities in Sri Lanka and expressed readiness to help in rehabilitation and resettlement work, together with an improvement in the political process towards peace building.

The telephone conversation was initiated by President Rajapaksa after the Sri Lankan government proclaimed victory over the LTTE, Monday 18, after three decades of conflict.

Agency reports said the Japanese Prime Minister had said he would like to see Sri Lanka build infrastructure, adding that Japan would support Sri Lanka’s efforts as much as possible.

Japan is Sri Lanka’s largest aid donor and the holder of two thirds of the countries foreign debt.
