LTTE mob attack on World Health Assembly,
Geneva |
|
|
|
Pro-LTTE mob entered the UN compound through
the main gates despite security resistance,
while Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, the
newly elected President of the WHA (World
Health Assembly), was presiding at the
plenary and the high level delegate of the
United States of America was addressing the
assembly, yesterday (May 18), evening.
According to the security division of the
World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN
in Geneva, the LTTE supporters who had been
protesting outside the UN against the
election of the Hon. Minister of Sri Lanka
as the President of the WHA, managed to
enter the UN compound through the main gates
despite security resistance. As the
protesters violently entered the UN
compound, UN security at Gate 40 activated
alarms and repeatedly announced to the UN
staff and the delegates to remain inside the
building. The security personnel of the UN
and the WHO then took preventive measure to
disperse the protestors.
Since last morning, LTTE supporters were
protesting in front of the WHO headquarters
carrying banners and shouting slogans
against the election of the Hon. Minister of
Healthcare and Nutrition of Sri Lanka as the
president of the WHA.
This attack follows a series of pro-LTTE mob
attacks on Sri Lankan Embassies in Western
Europe in the past few weeks while the other
attacks have been on Sri Lankan missions in
London, Paris, Oslo, Berlin and the
Netherlands. This is the first such attack
on the premises of an International body
with the standing of the WHO.
