Flow of praise for defeat of terrorism

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka government continue to receive praise and good wishes from many countries and national leaders for the successful defeat of terrorism in the country.

Russia welcomes defeat of terrorism

The Russian government welcomes the historic victory achieved by the Sri Lankan security forces against LTTE terrorists, resulting in the restoration of Government control over the entire territory of the country and the freeing of civilians held as human shields by the LTTE.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reflected the invaluable support of the Russian Federation for Sri Lanka’s counter-terrorism measures, both in the bilateral context, as well as at regional and international fora.

Malaysia admires liberating the areas from LTTE

Malaysia felicitates the Sri Lankan government for unifying the entire country and liberating the areas which were under the control of the LTTE for the past 27 years, Datuk Anifah Bin Haji Aman, Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister conveyed the Government’s appreciation of the generous contribution of US$ 100,000 by the Malaysian Government for the rehabilitation of IDPs in the North.

Iran-warm congratulations for defeating LTTE

The Islamic Republic of Iran has extended its warm congratulations to the President, and the Sri Lankan government on the success achieved by Sri Lanka in defeating LTTE terrorism.

The Iranian Foreign Minister said that Iran has maintained close relations with Sri Lanka and has always condemned terrorism and, consistently upheld the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. He said that he was speaking on behalf of the President of Iran who has conveyed his best wishes to Sri Lanka and will personally speak to the President of Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient time. Iran has also offered assistance through the Red Crescent, for the emergency relief operations for the IDPs in the North.

Pakistan felicitates “great victory over terrorism”

Pakistan has felicitated the Sri Lankan government on the achievement of the “great victory over terrorism”. It stated that Pakistan has always been a steadfast friend of Sri Lanka and strongly supported the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity and re-affirmed Pakistan’s continued cooperation with Sri Lanka in countering terrorism. Pakistan government congratulates Sri Lanka on the defeat of terrorism, which is indeed a great victory for all peace loving people in the country, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan said.

United States welcomes end of Sri Lankan conflict

The United States welcomes the end of fighting in Sri Lanka and the conclusion of a 26-year civil war. It remains deeply concerned for the welfare of the hundreds of thousands of displaced persons uprooted by the recent fighting.

In its message of welcome the US states, “we are prepared to work with the government to provide for the basic needs of all of its citizens, and abide by its commitment to return the majority of [displaced persons] to their homes by the end of this year. To heal the wounds created by terrorism, requires the government to work toward building a democratic and economically viable nation that is tolerant and united and works for social justice for all its citizens”.


Japan welcomes defeat of the LTTE

Japan welcomes the defeat of the separatists Tamil Tigers and the end of hostilities in Sri Lanka.

The Japanese Prime Minister welcomed the new developments, the ending of hostilities in Sri Lanka and expressed readiness to help in rehabilitation and resettlement work, together with an improvement in the political process towards peace building.

The Japanese Prime Minister said he would like to see Sri Lanka build infrastructure, adding that Japan would support Sri Lanka’s efforts as much as possible.
