India assures maximum assistance for IDP relief

India has expressed readiness to give maximum assistance to Sri Lanka’s programmes to provide relief and early resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) due to terrorism of the LTTE.

This assurance was given to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by India’s Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and National Security Adviser M. K. Narayan at a breakfast meeting with the President at Janadipathi Mandiraya, today, May 21.

They said the success of the government of Sri Lanka in defeating the LTTE, considered by many to be invincible was an example for the battle against terrorism carried out in many other countries, too.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Indian delegation had extensive discussions on the government’s current policies and programmes to bring relief to the IDPs, improve their livelihood standards, carry out resettlement and the clearing of war ravaged areas for development. The continued assistance from India for this work was assured by the Indian delegates.

Senior Advisor to the President Mr. Basil Rajapaksa MP, the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Alok Prasad and the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga participated at this meeting.
