What International Community?

Figures tell the truth

For the past several months Sri Lanka has been the focus of attack by the “International Community” as it exercised its sovereign right to eradicate terrorism from its soil.

The main allegations of violations of human rights, with dire predictions of “imminent humanitarian crises” and “bloodbaths”, based on often unverified information provided by pressure groups that support terrorism came from this “International Community”, which has not given up is moves to hinder and assail Sri Lanka, as she begins to restore democracy, after the successful military defeat of the “most ruthless terrorist organization in the world” as stated by the FBI of the USA in 2008.

Last Tuesday (May 19) the majority of members of this “International Community” called for and obtained a special session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) to discuss the humanitarian situation in Sri I Lanka, under the procedural rules of the HRC.

The requisition for this special session was signed by 17 members of the HRC, a largely Euro-centric group, influenced by the political and economic power centres of the west.

The total population of these 17 signatory countries is 597.5 million.

The total population of the 31 members of the HRC that did not sign the request for the special session is 3,694 million.

The populations of the world’s largest democracy alone, that did not sign the request is 1,200 million (1.2 billion).

The populations of countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Malaysia that largely follow western style democracy, but have not signed the call for the special session is 1,584.1 million.

The population of the South Asia region, no country of which signed the request for the special session, is 1,632.7 million.

By what calculation or imagination can governments representing 596.5 million comprise the International Community, against those that represent 3,694 million among members of the HRC, and an even larger number when those not in the HRC are also included?

Who is fooling whom, and to what purpose?
