President honoured with highest honour in land

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa was conferred Visvakeerthi Tri Sinhaladheesvara, honour by the Chief Incumbents of the Malwatte and Asgiri Chapters, the highest title that one born in the motherland could have, expect for the leadership in the battle to defeat terrorism.

The conferment took place at the historic Magulmaduwa in Kandy, on the evening of May 23.

The Defense Secretary, the Chief of Defense Staff and Commanders of the three Armed Forces, the Inspector Director General of Police and the Director of Civil Defense were also awarded honours by the Mahanayaka Theras. The President and the others honoured were also presented with special souvenirs by Diyawadane Nilame Pradeep Thilanga Dela of the historic Dalanda Maligawa.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the country that was on the verge of being divided has been unified and he pledged and affirmed before the historic Sacred Dalada (Tooth Relic) and the Venerable Maha Sangha that the country will be built not to face division again.

The President also stated that due to thirty years of terror many obligations towards the Buddha Sasana could not be discharged and the government, which considers its unique responsibility to build a righteous society, will fulfill all its duties with commitment.

Accepting the title of Vishvakeerthi Tri Sinhaladheesvara the President said he offers his salutation to the Maha Sangha by worshipping at their feet for the profound encouragement constantly given to him and the government.
