Govt. to promote coconut cultivation in
North |
|
|
|
A number of schemes have been drawn up by
the Ministry of Plantation Industries to
promote coconut cultivation in the North,
parallel to other development plans that are
being undertaken there.
Although the North is blessed with soil that
suits coconut cultivation, the LTTE
terrorism prevented cultivating coconut in
the North for the past 30 years. The
ministry is planning to establish
infrastructure facilities to upgrade coconut
cultivation there, after the resettlement of
civilians.
Each house will get 05 coconut plants under
the scheme and large scale industries will
also get free plants. To assist and promote
cultivators, the ministry is to introduce
coconut fertilizer at low prices. A new
variety of coconut that better suits the
climate of the North will also be
introduced.
This will also open many job opportunities
in the North and will help increase foreign
exchange earnings, too.
