Canadian MP debarred from entry

Canadian Liberal Member of Parliament, Bob Rae was not allowed to enter Sri Lanka when he arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport on June 10.

Immigration authorities delayed him at the airport due to intelligence reports of his alleged involvement with pro-LTTE activity in Canada, and he was later deported from the country on the next available flight.

Mr. Rae represents a constituency in Toronto in the Canadian Parliament. Toronto has the largest Sri Lankan expatriate Tamil population in the world. It has been a center of large scale pro-LTTE protests and instances of violence against non-Tamil expatriate Sri Lankans in Canada.

It is learnt that intelligence sources have informed the immigration authorities in Colombo of Mr. Rae's links with pro-LTTE activist groups in Toronto and the possibility of his being a security risk for Sri Lanka at present.

Canadian Police acting together with US authorities have arrested and brought to court several expatriate Tamils from Sri Lanka for illegal activities in support of the LTTE which is banned as a terrorist organization in Canada.

Mr. Rae is among those who was actively campaigning for a ceasefire during the final stages of the military operations to liberate the Tamil civilians from the LTTE, who were holding them as human shields and hostages, which was a well orchestrated call by all pro-LTTE groups in the west.
