The elections for the Jaffna Municipal Council and the Vavuniya Urban council are to be held on August 8th, the Election Secretariat said.

The total number of registered voters within the Municipality area is a little over 100,000, said the Deputy Elections Commissioner of Jaffna P. Kumanathan.

"Plans are afoot to afford an opportunity to all voters to exercise their franchise", he said.

Mr. Kumanathan has issued instructions for the conduct of a free and fair poll. He urged all political parties and officials to assist in holding a peaceful election.
