PMB extends help to farmers

Extending a helping hand to farmers, Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) expects to buy paddy in the forthcoming ‘Yala’ season at the same price PMB stipulated for the ‘Maha’ season in the years 2008/2009. PMB requests farmers to sell 10% of their ‘Yala’ harvest (500 Kg per hectare) at the same price they sold in the ‘Maha’ current season.

According to PMB calculations, if the guaranteed price during ‘Yala’ season 2009 could be fixed at a price level between Rs.28 – 30, there is a possibility of purchasing around 70,000 metric tons of paddy throughout the season. PMB estimates that a financial provision amounting Rs.2030 million will be required to purchase the expected amount of paddy.

PMB expects to purchase 20,000 metric tons of paddy each from Pollonnuruwa and Eastern agricultural zones at a cost of Rs.1160 million. From Anuradhapura zone, it will be 15,000 metric tons at Rs.435 million. It will be 8000 metric tons from the North Western zone at Rs.232 million and 7000 metric tons from Southern zone at Rupees 203 million.
