Muslim community support too needed to develop country - President

There should not be divisions among races, religions and castes in this country hereafter. The friendship we had in the past should continue in future too, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing a large group of Islam religious and lay persons, at Temple Trees on July 07.

President emphasized that support is needed from Muslim community, through the spirit of strength, peace, coexistence and brotherhood which are considered the foundations of Islam, for national development. He also called on everyone to act with one’s mind, and not on feelings.

Here is the text of the President’s comments made in Tamil

I welcome all of you who participate in this occasion. This is our motherland. We all are children of one mother. The Muslim community has been living with us as brothers.

Hereafter, there should not be divisions or mistrust among races, religions and castes in this country. The terrorists tried to destroy the friendship among communities. But it is still with us as it used to. Nobody can say it has been ended. This is the reality.

The development programs for this beautiful country are moving fast. The resettlements are also being done with speed. You, the devotees of Islam also should assist this. The foundation of Islam is strength, peace, brotherhood and coexistence.

Let’s act with our minds, not with our feelings. That is very important.

Firstly, secondly and thirdly we should give priority to our motherland.

All people here should live without any fear and mistrust. They all should have equal rights. It is my responsibility to ensure this.

I’m a friend of yours.

You can trust on me. Let’s unite to rebuild this beautiful country.
