War is over:
The need for ICRC lesser

The government of Sri Lanka on Thursday asked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to scale down its operations in the country, particularly in the Northern and Eastern Provinces due to the end of war.

As a result of improved security situation the government no longer needs any third party facilitation to reach people anywhere. In keeping with this policy, the government has directed the ICRC to scale down its operations in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

As a result, the ICRC said it was withdrawing expatriate staff from the North and East.

The Government has already resettled over 97 percent of the people who were displaced by terrorists in the East and the rest would be resettled soon. The situation in the East has improved. The government reiterates its commitment to resettle in six months all IDPs now staying in relief centres, after their release from being held in hostage by the LTTE.
