Sri Lanka to expand trade ties with Pakistan

Pakistan and Sri Lanka bilateral trade should be enhanced by identifying more potential products and effective utilizing of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both countries. This was jointly expressed by President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Anjum Nisar and Consul General of Sri Lanka V.S. Sidath Kumar in the 3rd meeting of Diplomatic Affairs Sub-Committee-KCCI, a KCCI press release said.

President, KCCI said that even in the presence of FTA between both countries, bilateral trade was not properly utilized in the past and it was the time to explore it.

He appreciated the active role of Sri Lanka in the SAARC forum.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka were lucrative investment destinations for exporters of both countries as on the one hand Pakistan was a gateway to resource-rich Central Asian States while on the other hand Sri Lanka enjoyed duty-free access to huge EU and Indian markets.

Anjum Nisar urged the Consul General to draw the attention of Sri Lankan Airline to operate direct flights to Colombo, recently the flights were operated from Karachi-Mumbai-Colombo and were consuming a long time.

Consul General of Sri Lanka, V.S. Sidath Kumar complimented the vibrant role of KCCI to promote trade. He also recalled the MoU signed KCCI and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce to encourage the exchange of trade delegations and to earmark the potential trading items.

He appreciated that Sri Lanka was enjoying trade with Pakistan in a friendly environment without any hurdle.
