Those killed all men above 18 in Sri Lanka now trying to teach us human rights - President

“Certain powers who killed all young men above 18 years following the great rebellion in Uva Wellassa in Sri Lanka are ridiculously trying to teach us human rights today. They are targeting Sri Lanka for alleged violations of human rights today to cover up their own sins in these massacres of the past", said President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday, July 20.

He said so addressing a meeting of disabled people at Pelawatte Sugar Plantation premises in the ancient Wellassa area where the great rebellion of Sri Lanka against British colonial rule took place in 1818.

"They systematically destroyed a self -sufficient economy by destroying the great irrigation works in the area. This area was an extremely rich area that was converted into one of poverty, he added.

President said that following the 1818 Uva Wellassa rebellion the result of loving one's own country and nation, the result of trying to emancipate one's own people from foreign yoke, we inherited a ruined economy of destroyed irrigation works and farm lands.

He said that today, to protect the same country which was rescued by the modern heroes of the county's armed forces, every citizen will have to put in a certain amount of hard work.

President said his government would reconstruct the great irrigation works destroyed by the imperialists by the conspiracy and restore them to their former glory. He promised to regenerate the economy destroyed by the conspiracy to one of prosperity soon.

He said he would see to small local bodies, Provincial Councils and the Central Government work smoothly and harmoniously like wheels of a great and efficient machine to uplift the country to a higher standard of living for the people.
