All measures in place to meet Northern housing demand

The government has taken steps to meet the housing demand in the North under the 'Uthuru Wasanthaya 'programme.

According to a recent survey by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) the districts of Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya and Kilinochchi need 200,000 housing units, where most houses have been destroyed in the past by the LTTE.

This programme is included in the resettlement plan of the displaced and all measures are in place to meet the housing demand.

The NHDA will initially construct 500 housing units at a cost of Rs.45 million while financial help would be offered to families for reconstruction of damaged houses.

In the Mannar district, construction of new houses and reconstruction of damaged houses have already begun.
