The Government hopes this cooperation would facilitating the participation of the vast pool of youth in the IDP camps to accomplish the goals of the construction industry in Sri Lanka, particularly in the North.

The pact is expected to revive the construction industry in Sri Lanka by injection of the latest technological inputs.

“We will design and establish vocational skill training centres in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Batticaloa to facilitate rehabilitation of affected people through impetrating skills training in construction trades,” said Director General of CIDC, P.R. Swarup.

“This effort will have wide social repercussions as it would make the rehabilitation process sustainable by creation of employment opportunities,” he said.

“There is a vast pool of youth in the camps of internally displaced persons who could be provided with opportunities to rebuild their own homes and infrastructure facilities,” said the Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Engineering Services in Sri Lanka, Mr. Wijeratne.

A ‘Standing Empowered Steering Group’ would be constituted to take necessary action to fulfill the objectives of the cooperation, said Mr. Swarup.
