Recognizing
the
vital
role of
infrastructure
development
in human
rehabilitation
programmes
the
Institute
for
Construction
Training
and
Development
(ICTAD)
of Sri
Lanka
recently
signed a
Memoranda
of
Understanding
(MoU)
with the
Construction
Industry
Development
Council
(CIDC)
of
India,
to train
more
than
70,000
construction
workers
in
trades
such as
supervision,
laboratory
technicians,
masonry,
carpentry,
plumbing
and
weldering.
The
Government
hopes
this
cooperation
would
facilitating
the
participation
of the
vast
pool of
youth in
the IDP
camps to
accomplish
the
goals of
the
construction
industry
in Sri
Lanka,
particularly
in the
North.
The
pact is
expected
to
revive
the
construction
industry
in Sri
Lanka by
injection
of the
latest
technological
inputs.
“We
will
design
and
establish
vocational
skill
training
centres
in
Jaffna,
Vavuniya,
Trincomalee
and
Batticaloa
to
facilitate
rehabilitation
of
affected
people
through
impetrating
skills
training
in
construction
trades,”
said
Director
General
of CIDC,
P.R.
Swarup.
“This
effort
will
have
wide
social
repercussions
as it
would
make the
rehabilitation
process
sustainable
by
creation
of
employment
opportunities,”
he said.
“There
is a
vast
pool of
youth in
the
camps of
internally
displaced
persons
who
could be
provided
with
opportunities
to
rebuild
their
own
homes
and
infrastructure
facilities,”
said the
Secretary
of the
Ministry
of
Construction
and
Engineering
Services
in Sri
Lanka,
Mr.
Wijeratne.
A
‘Standing
Empowered
Steering
Group’
would be
constituted
to take
necessary
action
to
fulfill
the
objectives
of the
cooperation,
said Mr.
Swarup.
Mr.
Wijeratne
would be
the
chairman
of the
group,
which
would
have two
members
each
from the
CIDC and
the
ICTAD.
