President Mahinda Rajapaksa congratulated his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on his re-election for a second term at his country's president.

The President conveyed his good wishes for the Iranian President in a telephone call yesterday.

The two leaders also discussed the future steps on further strengthening the ties between the two countries.

The Iranian President thanked Sri Lanka over support given in the past and for constructive ties.

Ahmadinejad was sworn for a second term on Wednesday, nearly two months after the elections.
