Archaeology dept. launches new digs

The Department of Archaeology is to launch 51 fresh projects within this year to excavate and preserve ancient sites with archeological values, said Acting Deputy Director of the Architectural Conservation Division of the Archaeology Department, Prasanna Rathnayake.

The initial steps have been taken to implement these projects with the allocation of Rs.10 million for conservation of the 'Ritigala Banda Pond'- a large stepped tank, intended for ritual bathing under the approval of Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, he added.

Another Rs.75 million granted under the Dutch-Lanka Friendship Foundation has been utilized for the conservation project of the Dutch Navy Commissioners official residence. The Sri Lanka Navy has extended its cooperation in this regard.

Meanwhile, the conservation work of the Dutch Fortress in Katuvana and the Star Fort in Matara will reach its completion by December this year at a cost of Rs.35 million funded by Netherland, the Deputy Director further stated.
