Digital technology for TV transmission in SL

Digital broadcasting technology is to be introduced in Sri Lanka next year, at present Sri Lanka deploys the analog technology for terrestrial television broadcasting.

With the objective of introducing digital terrestrial TV broadcasting the Cabinet approved an allocation of 150 million for Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Rs. 150 million for Independent Television Network in the 2010 budget, to purchase equipments and antennas required for digital technology, said Minister of Media and Information Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.

He pointed out that the introduction of digital technology would provide the capability to transmit four-five channels instead of a single channel using a single frequency, thus resulting in optimal utilization of the frequency spectrum available for television broadcasting and operational cost will also be reduced.
