The
government
inaugurated
a
massive
agricultural
project
yesterday
(Aug.
27) in
the
Jaffna
peninsula
for the
cultivation
of 450
hectares
of paddy
land,
under
the
‘Uthuru
Vasanthaya’
Northern
development
programme.
These
selected
paddy
lands in
Thananthilappu,
Marawankkulav-
south of
Chavakachchari
were
left
abandoned
due to
LTTE
terrorist
intimidation
for over
10
years.
The
re-cultivation
project
will
directly
benefit
624
farmer
families
and will
provide
much
indirect
employment
opportunities
to the
people
of the
region.
Senior
Presidential
Advisor
Basil
Rajapaksa
participating
as the
chief
guest at
the
event
said
another
land
area of
13,000
hectares
will be
cultivated
by the
next
season
and the
government
has
deployed
de-mining
teams to
unearth
the land
mines
and
evacuate
booby
traps
set by
the LTTE
terrorists
when
they
were
fleeing
the area
at the
latter
stages
of the
war.
The
government
will
grant a
cultivation
subsidy
of Rs.4,
000 per
acre and
in
addition
to
providing
fertilizer
and seed
paddy
free of
charge
to
encourage
farmers
engaged
in paddy
cultivation.
