Massive paddy cultivation in North

The government inaugurated a massive agricultural project yesterday (Aug. 27) in the Jaffna peninsula for the cultivation of 450 hectares of paddy land, under the ‘Uthuru Vasanthaya’ Northern development programme.

These selected paddy lands in Thananthilappu, Marawankkulav- south of Chavakachchari were left abandoned due to LTTE terrorist intimidation for over 10 years.

The re-cultivation project will directly benefit 624 farmer families and will provide much indirect employment opportunities to the people of the region.

Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa participating as the chief guest at the event said another land area of 13,000 hectares will be cultivated by the next season and the government has deployed de-mining teams to unearth the land mines and evacuate booby traps set by the LTTE terrorists when they were fleeing the area at the latter stages of the war.

The government will grant a cultivation subsidy of Rs.4, 000 per acre and in addition to providing fertilizer and seed paddy free of charge to encourage farmers engaged in paddy cultivation.
