The
Western
Provincial
Council
is
planning
to use
wind
power to
illuminate
Colombo
city in
association
with
Concurrent
Infrastructure
Ltd, an
Indian
based
private
company,
while
there is
another
plan in
the
pipeline
to use
wind
power
for the
street
lamps
island
wide.
A
pilot
project
was
launched
on the
Negombo
beach on
Friday
with the
help of
Concurrent
Infrastructure
Ltd, and
it is to
be
implemented
in other
parts of
the
province
if it
proves a
success.
This
technology
could be
used for
street
lamps in
all
parts of
the
country.
And this
was also
a clear
testimony
that
investors
were
showing
great
interest
in
investing
in Sri
Lanka
after
the war,
said the
Chief
Guest at
the
launch,
Sarath
Kumara
Gunaratne,
Non
Cabinet
Minister
of
Aviation
and
Ports.
A
distinct
feature
of this
technology
is that
power
could be
generated
with low
speed
winds
unlike
in the
usual
wind
power
generation
technology
where
high
speed
winds
are
needed
to
generate
power.
According
to the
technology
one wind
powered
generator
is
capable
of
illuminating
fifty
60w
bulbs.
In
the case
of a
domestic
needs,
one such
generator
is
capable
of
supplying
the
electricity
needs of
a two
bed
roomed
rural
house
and this
is said
to be an
environmentally
friendly
method,
with no
pollution
involved.
