Road Development in Uva and East

The International Development Association of the World Bank has agreed to provide USD 105 million for the implementation of two major provincial roads projects in Uva and the East.

The project will upgrade and rehabilitate 200kms of provincial roads in the Uva Province and 100km of provincial roads in Ampara District in the Eastern Region. It is aimed at improving access to social and economic activities in the Eastern and Uva Provinces through the sustainable management of improved road infrastructure.

It is also expected to have a reduction in the average passenger travel time, increase in the share of roads in good condition and increase in the level of satisfaction from communities and road users along the roads. The project will be commenced in September, 2009 and is expected to be completed in September 2014.

The project will be implemented by the Uva and the Eastern Provincial Councils through their respective Departments of Provincial Roads Development.
