New Secretary to Media Ministry

 

Mr. W. B. Ganegala, currently functioning as Secretary to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development has been appointed as Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, with immediate effect.

Mr. Ganegala has served in the same capacity from 2004 to 2007 and implemented several programs for the benefit of Media personnel and the Media Industry.

He was instrumental in preparation of National Media Policy. The World Press Freedom Day-2006 which was attended by about 80 countries was organised by Mr. Ganegala in liaison with all state and private institutions and also with the assistance of all Media Associations functioning in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Ganegala did much to assist provincial journalists in the country launching a program to provide assistance to them in training, equipment and transport.

He also implemented the levy for imported teledramas, films and advertisements proposed by the President. He saw the completion of the three-storeyed building where the Ministry of Mass Media and Information is now housed within 18 months, which brought a saving of around 25 m. per year earlier paid as rent the World Trade Center.

A graduate of the University of Colombo in Economics he holds a Diploma in Banking of the Bankers Training Institute and a Certificate in Public Administration of the SLIDA.
