Govt. to construct more hydropower plants

The government has taken actions to construct four medium-scale hydropower plants under Uma Oya, Moragalla Oya, Ginganga and Broadland projects. Construction work has already commenced on the Uma Oya and Broadland medium scale hydropower plants, Power and Energy Ministry said.

The project will involve the construction of two reservoirs on tributaries of the Uma Oya River and one tunnel on the river itself to divert water to a powerhouse further downstream.

Once completed, the Uma Oya project will add 90 MW of electricity to the national grid and irrigate 5,000 hectares of agricultural land. The project is estimated to cost US$16 billion. The Government of Sri Lanka is financing the project with US$450 million from Iran.

The 32MW capacity Broadlands Hydropower Project (BHP) is a Run–of–River (ROR) type development in the Kelani River, in the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

These four power plants are the final medium-scale hydro power plants planned to be constructed in the country.
