The
government
has
taken
actions
to
construct
four
medium-scale
hydropower
plants
under
Uma Oya,
Moragalla
Oya,
Ginganga
and
Broadland
projects.
Construction
work has
already
commenced
on the
Uma Oya
and
Broadland
medium
scale
hydropower
plants,
Power
and
Energy
Ministry
said.
The
project
will
involve
the
construction
of two
reservoirs
on
tributaries
of the
Uma Oya
River
and one
tunnel
on the
river
itself
to
divert
water to
a
powerhouse
further
downstream.
Once
completed,
the Uma
Oya
project
will add
90 MW of
electricity
to the
national
grid and
irrigate
5,000
hectares
of
agricultural
land.
The
project
is
estimated
to cost
US$16
billion.
The
Government
of Sri
Lanka is
financing
the
project
with
US$450
million
from
Iran.
The 32MW
capacity
Broadlands
Hydropower
Project
(BHP) is
a
Run–of–River
(ROR)
type
development
in the
Kelani
River,
in the
Central
and
Sabaragamuwa
provinces.
These
four
power
plants
are the
final
medium-scale
hydro
power
plants
planned
to be
constructed
in the
country.
