India reiterates support to Sri Lanka

The Government of India reiterated its willingness to provide further humanitarian assistance in specific areas upon request. This was conveyed by India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Smt. Preneet Kaur when she met with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama at the 8th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting held in Colombo yesterday.

The Foreign Minister stated that from the perspective of the Government of Sri Lanka, everything possible was being done to improve the conditions in the IDP welfare villages.

He also detailed the actions taken by the Government in resettling the IDPs and explained the difficulties that the Government encountered in this process. De-mining work carried out by the Sri Lanka Army and the Indian De-mining team are progressing expeditiously, nevertheless more assistance is required to complete this process, the Minister further said.

State Minister Kaur stated that she was aware of the difficulties in such an exercise and agreed to discuss the possibility of increasing assistance to Sri Lanka referring to the offer of assistance for rebuilding the Duraiappa Stadium and establishing a cultural centre in Jaffna.
