Thailand considering adopting tactics of SL

The Government of Thailand is considering to adopt techniques used by Sri Lanka in dealing with the LTTE in Thailand's efforts to contain the insurgency in the South.

'The Thailand government was interested in the negotiation approaches used by Sri Lanka and its measures to squeeze the LTTE's sources of funding, said Thailand Acting Government Spokesman Panitan Wattanayakorn.

Tough crackdowns were also key to Sri Lanka's success in its fight against the LTTE, which should serve as a good lesson for Thailand, Wattanayakorn further said.

Strengthening cooperation with neighboring countries to keep an eye on separatist movements outside the country was another interesting approach, he said.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday held talks with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka, on the Sri Lankan government's success in putting down the LTTE movement, reported the Bangkok Post.
