Responding
to
comments
by the
UN Human
Rights
Spokesman,
Rupert
Colville,
the
Minister
for
Disaster
Management
and
Human
Rights,
Mahinda
Samarasighe
stated
that
Colville
has
ignored
the
State
Department's
comment
that the
incidents
mentioned
in the
US State
Department
report
have not
been
verified
and that
Colville
goes to
the
extent
of
stating
that the
United
Nations
Security
Council
should
probe
Sri
Lanka on
possible
war
crimes.
In the
aftermath
of the
US
Department
of State
report
to the
Congress
on
Incidents
During
the
Recent
Conflict
in Sri
Lanka,
UN Human
Rights
Spokesman,
Rupert
Colville
has
stated
that the
incidents
mentioned
in the
report
are not
investigated.
The
Minister
condemned
Colville's
statements
that
something
like
Gaza
Fact
Finding
mission
is
warranted
for Sri
Lanka.
He added
that
there is
no
comparison
whatsoever
to this
situation
in the
case of
Sri
Lanka.
The
Minister
said he
was
surprised
and
concerned
that
individuals
act on
their
own
agendas
and make
rash
statement
totally
disrespecting
the very
clear
inter-governmental
decision
taken in
Geneva
in May,
where
the
members
of the
UN Human
Rights
Council
agreed
to
assist
Sri
Lanka in
post-
conflict
reconstruction.
He
recalled
that the
Council
passed
by a 29-
12 vote
a Sri
Lankan
resolution
that
called
the
members
to
assist
in
efforts
to
address
the
needs of
IDPs.
