End to war is not a reason to relax - President

The 30 year war against terror in the country is over but this is not a reason to relax. We have to work hard for the development of the country, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Convocation of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University held at BMICH yesterday (27).

The country has begun a new era and those who suffered in the past are now living in happiness because of sacrifices made by our war heroes. We must be grateful to them, he further said.

When soldiers carried out the humanitarian operation to rescue trapped civilians, they were holding a gun in one hand and the Human Rights Declaration in the other, with love in their hearts. In this context our security forces cannot be compared to any other security force in the world. Knowledge, intellect and love for the country disciplined them, the President stated.

If a war of this scale took place in any other country, thousands of civilians would have died. But this did not happen in Sri Lanka, he added.

President Rajapaksa noted that each member of the Security Forces holding a gun has more responsibility than anyone else. They should protect every citizen and carry out their duty towards national security.

Even though terrorism is wiped out, national security cannot be forgotten. In the past many opportunities were lost because this was forgotten. In future this cannot happen, the President further stated.
