The
Tourism
Ministry
has
taken
actions
to
develop
Kumpuruppidi,
the
longest
coastal
belt in
Trincomalee
District,
to be
one of
the
prime
integrated
tourist
resorts.
This is
done
under
the
project
to
develop
it as an
up
market
tourism
resort
in the
Eastern
coast of
Sri
Lanka.
The
project
objectives
are to
plan and
coordinate
the
implementation
of
tourism,
properly
provide
with
basic
infrastructure,
social
and
recreational
facilities
and
sufficient
economic
opportunities.
It also
promotes
eco-tourism
while
preserving
the
natural
recourses
and the
cultural
heritage
which
has a
potential
for
wider
spectrum
of
development
for
tourism.
Closer
to 140
acres of
land
will be
allocated
to
develop
recreational
facilities,
green
belts,
no-built-zones,
road
network
and
public
utilities.
With
this
investment
it is
expected
to
create
4000
direct
jobs
other
than the
huge
amount
of
indirect
job
opportunities
that
will be
created
for the
local
community.
Economic
opportunities
for
tourism
will
also be
tapped
while
preserving
the
values
and
culture
of the
people
of
Kumpuruppidi.
The
public-private
participation
will
also be
prompted
to
uplift
the
physical
quality
of live
of
people
there.
Kumpuruppidi
is 40
kms of
length
and
enriched
with
protective
coastal
topographical
features.
The
total
area of
the
resort
is 438
Sq. Kms.
It
consists
62% of
forest
and
scrub
while
14% of
inland
water.
