Inflation continues to decelerate

 

The annual average inflation rate, as measured by the Colombo Consumer’s Price Index, continued to decelerate since November, 2008 and reached the five year low of 5.2 per cent, compared to 6.6 per cent in the previous month, states the Central Bank.

At the same time, the core inflation, which measures the price movement of non-food and non-energy items of the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI), further dropped in October, 2009.

The CCPI increased marginally by 0.4 per cent over the previous month, with the Index moving upward to 209.4 from 208.6 in September, 2009. The rate of inflation, on a year on year basis, increased marginally to 1.4 per cent in October, 2009 from 0.7 per cent in September, 2009. Meanwhile, the core inflation, on a point-to-point basis, decreased further to 5.1 per cent compared to 5.4 per cent in September, 2009 with the annual average rate also declining to 11.0 per cent from 12.1 per cent in the previous month, stated the Central Bank.
