SL will help bring to justice the masterminds involved in migrant smuggling
– President

Sri Lanka will cooperate with Australia to investigate, track down and bring to justice the masterminds who are involved in migrant smuggling, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This was conveyed to the Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, when he met the President at Temple Trees today (09).

The President further said that the government is concerned about people who are being victimized and trafficked by criminal elements. He stressed that the government will leave no room for criminals to damage the good image of Sri Lanka by false accusations of migrants being subject to various harassments. He further said that the government is ready to take back those who tried to migrate.

Apart from discussion on countering migrant smuggling, the Australian Foreign Minister conveyed Australia's interest for more engagement in the rehabilitation and reconstruction in the North and East. The President pointed out that housing is an area that needs attention. The Australian Foreign Minister further said that his government is willing to help Sri Lanka in its de-mining efforts.

Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two countries concerning Legal Cooperation against the Smuggling of Migrants. Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, Suhada Gamlath and the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of Australia, John McCarthy signed the MoU.
