Rice Bowl area to re-cultivate

The Government is taking steps to re-cultivate 7000 acres in Rice Bowl area in Mannar with special care and attention hoping a good harvest, Northern Province Governor Major General (retired) G.A. Chandrasiri said.

The Northern Province Governor said that this area of 7,000 acres have been identified as the most fertile area in the province for paddy cultivation. “Irrigation Department has big hopes that the farmers would receive a very good harvest in next Maha season”, he said.

Governor Chandrasiri said that the catchment areas of the Giant Tank have been expanded to receive the water for the resettled farmers’ cultivation purposes while the fears for mines have also been cleared. The farmers have also provided seed paddy to kick off their farming activities.
