No more Jaffna IDPs at Vavuniya welfare centers

 

All IDPs originating from Jaffna who lived in the Menik Farm welfare village will be resettled in the Jaffna District today (Nov. 26).

Thus there will be no more Jaffna IDPs in Menik Farm from today.

A total of 59,475 IDPs were removed from welfare centres in Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee (Pulmoddai) for their re-settlement in Jaffna, said a report from the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Resettlement.

Secretary to the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Resettlement, U.L.M. Haldeen said that as a result the number of IDPs in Vavuniya District had come down to 121,617 as at 25 Nov.”.

He also said that IDPs originating from Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Ampara have been completely resettled and were back to their normal livelihoods as planned under the directive of the Presidential Task Force on Resettlement and Rehabilitation.

According to reports from the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Resettlement, the total number of returnees from Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee (Pulmoddai) to various Districts from 26 March – 18 June 09, is 111, 839.

Meanwhile, the Government has taken action to allow all IDPs the freedom of movement from December 1, and the welfare villages would be open villages, Haldeen noted.
