SAARC Ministers praise SL progress in English and IT

The SAARC Ministers of Science & Technology praised Sri Lanka's rapid progress in the field of English and Information Technology. They noted that progress has been made within a short time period.

These comments were made when they met President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 24 Nov at Temple Trees during their participation at the Second Meeting of the SAARC Ministers of Science & Technology held on 24 and 25 Nov in Colombo.

The government of Sri Lanka has named the year 2009, as the Year of English and IT, and programmes are being carried out to spread English and IT to all corners of the island, especially through the Nenasala programme.

The SAARC Ministers expressed their support for the successful implementation of this programme.

The President stated that youth from the rural sector are able to connect with the world through the internet because of the Nenasala programme. Information Technology which existed in Sri Lanka in a very small scale is now expanding rapidly and it is the aim of the government to create a future generation which can conquer the world of IT, stressed the President.

The Ministerial meeting was attended by Ministers of Science and Technology from SAARC countries namely, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan.
