Sri Lankan wins World Challenge global competition

 

After receiving over 900 nominations and a record breaking 127,800 votes from around the world, BBC has chosen its World Challenge 09 winner.

Safe Bottle Lamp Project, from Sri Lanka, received the first prize of
US$20,000 at a special ceremony held at The Hague. The 2 runners-up were also present and received US$10,000 each. They are Danamon Go-Green, form Indonesia and BTTR Ventures, from the USA.

World Challenge is the unique global competition which is making a difference to thousands around the world by identifying and rewarding projects and businesses which use grassroot solutions to bring economic, social and environmental benefits to local communities. This year's finalists have been filmed for a series of programmes on BBC World News television.

Launched in 2005, it has grown year on year. Last year, 726 nominations were received and over 71,000 people voted for a truly diverse range of projects and businesses.
