Historic Hindu shrine in North opens for pilgrims

The historic Keerimalai Naguleswaram Kovil in Kankasanthurai, Jaffna peninsula was open for devotees from yesterday.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa directed the authorities to open the Kovil for pilgrims, Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, Governor of the Northern Province said.

The location of this Kovil was within the High Security Zone since 1990 and the devotees and priests needed special permission from security officials to visit the premises.

The road from Senthankulam to Keerimalai is opened for the public and devotees would be able to visit the Naguleswaram Kovil daily for their worshiping, the Governor said.

A special bus service from Jaffna will start from today to cater to the travel needs of pilgrims from the Jaffna area.
