Development war will be won – President

“I carried out the most arduous exercise of eradicating terrorism in the country and I will win the development war to create better future for our posterity”, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Elections Secretariat after handing over nomination papers for the upcoming Presidential election.

He said the people assigned him with a special task of reuniting the Motherland and he was able to achieve what the people expected from him. The country is going for a Presidential election for the first time after terrorism was wiped out from the country, he said.

“It is not difficult for me to meet the challenges of development if terrorism was crushed within four years”, he stressed.

Candidates from 18 recognized political parties and five independent groups handed over nominations for the Presidential Polls.

The President arrived in Kandy afterwards. He visited the Maha Nayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters and paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa yesterday.

Three thousand members of the Maha Sangha chanted Pirith to invoke blessings on the President Rajapaksa.

This was the first instance when such a large number of Maha Sangha had congregated to one place to take part in religious observances. The clergy were from the Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala Sasanarakshaka Mandalayas.

All sections of people including those in the remotest villages had understood the services rendered to the country by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. They are prepared to show their gratitude to the President, Malwatte Chapter Anunayaka Thera Most Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera said.
