After the defeat of terrorism, community bonds have become very powerful – President

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the terrorists attempted to shatter the harmony that existed between all communities within the country and after their defeat, the bond between all communities in independent Sri Lanka have become very powerful.

Addressing the All Ceylon Muslim Congress Party Convention at the Aalankudah grounds in Puttalam, the President said that he was happy to meet the Muslim community, who live in the country in absolute amity and harmony.

The President pointed out that efforts made by the terrorists to strain links between communities were totally unsuccessful. "There is a peaceful environment prevailing in the country and all civilians can now live without fear and suspicion", he noted. He assured that tragic events such as the Katthankudi Mosque incident, where the LTTE cadres massacred innocent Muslim devotees will not recur.

Mutual relations between himself and the Muslim community are strong and secure. Development is taking place in the country. All citizens can equally reap its benefits. The President said he solicited the support of the entire nation irrespective of all differences for the success of the programme mooted to build the country.

The Government has accepted the responsibility of the civilians affected by terrorism. The President opined that the resettlement of these civilians in their places of origin was being accelerated.

Muslim representatives giving their views, solemnly pledged their unstilted support for the triumph of the President who has assured to safeguard the rights of all communities, regardless of differences.

Earlier, addressing the representatives of the Public Service United Nurses Union at Temple Trees, the President said that the government has done substantial amount of work for the benefit of the nurses. Decisions have been made and arrangements are underway to address the basic issues of the nurses. Nurses training schools have increased to 19 and their exams would be conferred degree status.

“For me the nurse is more of a motherly figure than a professional,” said the President and added that the quality of nurses would be uplifted to the international level.
