Resettled Northern children commence education

 

With the commencement of the first school term for 2010, a total of 897 schools have opened for studies in Mannar, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya Districts in the Northern Province from yesterday (Jan 04).

By yesterday, 6051 students from Mannar, Kilinochchi and Madu have started attending school.

Northern Province Governor, G. A. Chandrasiri stated that this was a great achievement in the government’s resettlement process as children of resettled families are now able to continue with their education without interruption after years of oppression under the LTTE.

The Governor further stated that with resettlement being completed in the Northern areas, children have been able to start their education immediately.

21 schools are functioning in the Vavuniya District from yesterday of which 9 schools were newly established.

6 schools were newly established in Pundivirichchan in Mannar District and opened from yesterday. 7 newly established schools in Madu will be opened from 10th January. The total number of schools functioning in Mannar District has now increased to 20, said Northern Province Governor, G. A. Chandrasiri.

Including Kilinochchi MMV, 17 schools were opened in Kilinochchi District from yesterday. Five in Karachchi and 3 in Punakarin were newly established.

Mannar District received 21 schools under the 'Uthuru Vasanthaya' Programme. 7 were newly established schools.
